Unexpected Kindness: A gesture that made a world of difference

Last Sunday morning, I received an unexpected call from the wonderful caretaker of our apartment in Mindelo Island (you might remember her from my January review post!). She's been incredibly supportive since we moved in. This time, she called with an extraordinary offer: she wanted to take Khalil to her farmhouse in the countryside, along with her grandson, She said  “I want to take Khalil out so you can have at least 2 hours to yourself “ ☺☺☺🥲 ☺☺☺🥲

As any special needs parent knows, this kind of offer is pure gold. Even though a little bit of "what if" anxiety crept in, I was willing to give it a chance.

I called her back several times (probably about five times! 🤦🏽‍♀) to make sure she was absolutely certain. She reassured me, explaining that there were animals on the farm and she thought Khalil would love it. From our previous conversations, I had a feeling she understood quite a bit about autism.

Khalil was thrilled at the mention of "farm" and ready to go from the moment I told him.

When she arrived, It took a little bit of convincing to get him to go without me (he kept bringing me my shoes! 🤪), but eventually, he went along. I asked her to send pictures and videos and to call me if anything came up.

The picture above tells the whole story! 🥰🥰 That's his signature move when he's super excited. 💙 She brought him back exactly two hours later, as promised. She said the only "problem" was that he didn't want to leave! 🥲

When he got home, I gave him prompts to get him to tell me about his adventure.

I was able to get him to say “I see goat, pig and dog” that’s a win for me 🙌🙌

This is the kind of support that makes all the difference for special needs parents. I was overflowing with gratitude! I couldn't thank her enough. 🤗

She even promised to take him again the following week (today!), but unfortunately we are back at home with the rest of the family in Praia for a few weeks to refresh, recharge, and re-strategize before returning to school.

When I told her we were traveling, she was so understanding and offered comforting words, promising to introduce me to more outdoor activities for Khalil when we return. She mentioned a friend who owns a ranch and suggested equine-assisted therapy (horseback riding!).

Kind people do still exist. Never forget that. 😊

To all my fellow special needs parents, I hope this story reminds you that support can come from unexpected places. Don't be afraid to accept help when it's offered, and cherish the kindness of others.
